WARNING! Copper is a reactive metal. You may get color changes due to the copper pot if you try it. Geez that’s a good point! I was thinking a metal pot of some sort since a lot of these dye baths are the ‘boil for 20 minutes’ type. But if I go with something that doesn’t need to boil, I could easily use a Rubbermaid bin or some such.

Yup. Pre-wet my test pieces. A cheap stock or canning pot is likely the best way to go. An over frock has a lot of material.

Well things are getting serious now. Hope I got the sizing correct. 3 yards was just barely enough to get all the pieces cut and it took some figuring and adjusting. Next frock I’ll order 4 yards so give myself enough room. I’m 5’10”, 220lbs with a 46” chest. I made the body 36” wide. Sleeves are 25” wide by 19” long… which may be a bit short but was all I could fit on the remaining fabric. If I would have made the body fall 3” shorter, I would have been golden. I learned something there! This is going to be a lot of stitches!! Backstitch the seams… do seams need felled or is an overcast on the raw edges appropriate for a utility garment like this?

I’ll do this a day when Samantha and the kids are out of the house to avoid… questions. She’s already aware of the increased crafting going on and the random deliveries of books and fabric pieces. Ha.

Backstitch the seams… do seams need felled or is an overcast on the raw edges appropriate for a utility garment like this? I backstitch all the primary seams then roll the seam allowance under and finish with a second line of stitching or I do this on both sides of the seam after pressing open - encloses the raw edges and leaves a finished look. Not absolutely necessary, but it's a compulsion... You can see both ways in this image - the flat seam is from shoulder seam to neck and the rolled is sleeve to body. Seen from inside the shirt.

Nice! That helps. Good looking gathers too! Backstitch for main seam. Running stitch for securing the seam allowance?
Geez this stuff is fun!

I do use a running stitch - it it hardly visible on the "right" side of the garment.

“Practice” collar piece that I decided would be too small for an overshirt. I thought I would be asking which natural dye goes well with blood, but so far, so good. Backstitch needs to be a little tighter, but not bad for a first go. Whipped butt seam I’m pretty pleased with.
