I like it a lot, Hawkeyes. You have a great eye for this stuff and your making is excellent. Thanks for sharing, brother.

I was just thinking that… View AttachmentView AttachmentThis is tarred hemp ‘marline’. I have the tarred hemp rope that I used on my tumpline… this is the ‘companion’ smaller cordage. Comes in various sizes, but what I have on hand looks to be good for cocking a hat. And maybe a simple cord hatband. Gotta find how the cocking cords worked… Seeing as the Phineas Meags hat is only 20 minutes away in the Hartford Historical Society,,, I wonder of it can be viewed sometime when you come up to see your inlaws?

I’ll be up last week this month. That’s a good idea. Was also thinking of looking into Groton Heights battlefield. That is, IF I can break away for a bit. Beachhouse with 19 family, 11 of whom are under seven… 😬
But that’s a fabulous idea. How often does one get to see an artifact such as that.

I’m not much of a drinker, but I have ale and Sailor Jerry put away to take along.
Ages 1-7. Heavy on the 1-2-3s. 😬

Much time as I spend aloft under a big oak, beech or hickory with eyeballs up having the back cocked is a must. That, or be more particular about the trees you pick to sit under. As they say, every cloud has a silver lining. When I got old and humpbacked, the hat ceased to be a problem. Spence

Spence… that first looks to be an excellent napping tree. I have several located in our mountains and along Penns Creek. Nothing like an outdoor snooze to refresh mind and spirit.

Cording… in and out of the crown and tied inside? I cannot seem to find information on how it was done in the period. Or how they were secured and then allowed to be un-cocked. I know how I would do it, but want to learn how they did it. Any resources out there?

See how that was tied. Probably could be handled by letter..... I mean email.

There used to be a spirit called ‘Root’ that was based on a historic Thomas Jefferson recipe. Delicious and PC. Alas… they don’t make it anymore. It was truly wonderful stuff.

From the Connecticut HS online collections… they only have a single image available, but have a wonderful description that gives all the relevant information. This apparently was originally a fully-cocked hat. DESCRIPTION: Dark felt hat with round crown. The brim is 2 1/2 inches wide, increasing in width to 4 3/8 inches where it is cocked up. The cocked side of the brim is held up by a string which is laced through four holes. (Other holes in the brim indicate that this was probably originally a tricorn hat with a brim consistently 4 3/8 inches wide; the holes indicate where the brim was cocked up.) Surrounding the base of the crown like a hat band is a knotted string. The hat was originally lined; only the remnants of the lining remain around the base of the crown.
Two holes in the crown are the result of musket fire; the small hole is the entry wound, and the large hole is the exit wound.
They also give dimensions that indicate a 4-1/4” crown. Everything one would need to reproduce this hat. Neat! Not sure how the non-round brim would look uncocked. But I guess we’ll find out. I’ve found enough references to this style back to the 1750s to go with a fantail. While this looks to apparently be a round hat cocked on the left (the position of the bullet holes makes me wonder though…), this would work fine cocked in the rear. As with everything, I need to remember that this won’t be the only object I make and get on with it already. 😜
