So this and all other projects I have going will be a slow roll while I concentrate on two shirts I’m sewing and the flintlock build. $50 on sale at Samson. I’ll line it, but I’m really struggling with what shape to go with. Thoughts?

Good blank, not a fan of the seller... However!
I'd potentially cut the brim down a tad and wear her as is, like a common low crown hat of sorts. I do have the back brim pinned up with a brass pin though. Nothing more annoying than sitting against a tree and having a brim continually being a nuisance.

Agree about the back brim. It can be an irritation while sitting in the woods.
Was there a particular style to a cocked has in the 1750s compared to the AWI period? Need to find something to bind the edge and ‘appropriate’ cord if I decide to cock it.

I personally have no records myself. However mine is not cocked to the side, just a slouchy woods worn hat that's seen the rain snow and sun.

Keep the head cozy! Hats for all! But what KIND of hat?? I would cut the brim down some. I can't remember if our conversation about my hat project was by email, pm, or in one of these topics. I believe I posted a pic or sent it to you of how I cut it evenly all the way around. I think I even have a topic somewhere here on the project that has pics of the cutting amd the edge binding process. That said, if you go with a bound edge due to your more affluent persona, I would still advise waiting to stitch one on until after an outing or two. I wish I had cut mine more narrow, but I'm not willing to go through the process of seam ripping to remove the binding, cutting the brim again, then sewing the binding back on. Mine is not cocked on the rear only due to the fact that I can't think of a way to do it that would allow me to let the cocked part down in bad weather that doesn't violate the hat in a way that would allow that same weather in. Allowing the back to slightly "slouch(?)" down does somewhat alleviate a bit of the annoyance of it rubbing on things in the woods. Samsons will NEVER see even a plug nickel from me.

Ok. What’s with Samsons? PM if ye must, but that’s two guys I admire that brought it up. I think the way the cocks we’re done to allow the brim down was a cord in a tight-fitting hole in the crown that stays put. So the hole is tight around the cord. Loop of cord over the cocked brim to a button. I guess it could also come up from the brim right beside the crown. I got distracted doing brakes on the Olds for a bit, but I’m back in 1750s mode now.

I have 2 tricorns - bloody useless things for keeping the rain and sun off. I'd probably go with a cut-down brim cocked in the back as described by Hawkeyes (as a matter of pure utility). You can always have a polite-society hat for dress occasions (tricorn)...

Were cockades worn by civilians at this time? A related item from a little earlier, all civilian: The Dividing Line betwixt Virginia and North Carolina, Wm. Byrd, 1729 "A small distance from our Camp we crost a creek which we call’d Cocquade Creek, because we there began to wear the Beards of the Wild turkey-Cocks in our hats by way of Cocquade." Spence

You can always have a polite-society hat for dress occasions (tricorn)... That’s actually a good plan. TWO hats! How simple!
