Be careful out there, boys. I once saw a woman die from tetanus after having her ears pierced. It is not a nice way to go. Spence Death by tetanus ranks right up there with death by rabies. Which reminds me to go check my booster date.

Most envious of your presentation and dish collection Spence. Especially the donabe rice cooker.

Oh thank you Spence. That all looks wonderful. I just finished eating and now I am hungry again. Some of that brings back some good memories. Much focus is placed on sushi here now,,, but I like almost all the various types of Japanese dishes. Do you have any trouble getting ingredients where you live?

Black Hand, unfortunately most of the Thai restaurants we have here now have become more of a fusion type thing. I prefer more authentic food,,, for any kind of ethnic cuisine. Luckily I do have 2 really good Vietnamese places nearby and a Laotion place that isn't too far of a drive for an occasional visit. The 1 or 2 Thai places that have remained fairly pure are very expensive. For food from the Philippines I am lucky to have a few friends who occasionally provide some good home cooking. I don't normally eat any organ meat other than heart, but, a good beef caldereta with the liver worked in is really hard to beat.

Do you have any trouble getting ingredients where you live? I'm pretty lucky in that regard. There are two good oriental groceries within easy reach, and I rarely fail to find what I'm looking for. Sashimi-quality seafood is a bit more difficult, but I rarely use that. Most dishes and other equipment have to be ordered online, though. Spence

A discerning eye. I've never used the donabe for rice, I have a Zojarushi rice cooker for that. The donabe is what I always use for nimono, simmered vegetable dishes, and it's a delight for that. Japanese dishes are almost an art form in themselves. There's a lot of very old and admirable philosophy involved in many of them. The Japanese firmly believe and practice the idea that eating involves much more than just the taste of the food, that the sight, smell and presentation are all equally important parts of the experience. Many of the dishes reflect that, and they do contribute to your enjoyment if you are in tune with those ideas. It definitely works for me. Spence

I have a small cheap electric rice cooker, it was a gift 10 years ago, darn thing works perfect. I don't eat Cheetos very often but when I do I use chopsticks to eat them. It's fun and I don't get orange fingers that way.

I've had a lot of interest over the years, but most of my hobbies are in the past now. Photography was one of my first, has been a favorite for many years, and continues to be. Flyfishing and fly tying, trail riding, sailing small and large sailboats, flying old wood and cloth airplanes, backpacking, collecting primitive antiques, radio control planes and boats...well, it has been a busy and fun time.

When my two oldest boys were adolescents they got competely wrapped up in bird watching. Helping them with that got me hooked, and we've all suffered with it ever sense. That fit right in with my interest in photography, and I have had a lot of fun making photos of birds around the area, most of them in my own yard. Here's my favorite picture of the female northern Cardinal. Spence
