For me hunting in any form is my hobby/passion far and above anything else. I just love being out in the bush amongst nature and away from people. I'm guilty now that I pretty much just hunt with muzzleloaders of not even loading my gun while I'm hunting, it's more an excuse to go for a bushwalk. I've always had a few mental health issues and being in the bush is a form of meditation for me where I can feel all my stress and cloudiness dissipate.
Other than that, I enjoy reading, again mostly about hunting but also about history. My favourite author is Jim corbett who was born in India during the British Raj, he hunted man-eating tigers and leopards and is famous for that but my favourite of his books and topics are on nature and conservation. I'd recommend "Jungle Lore" to anyone interested.
I also enjoy books about Africa, never got into Capstick but some of the british hunters wrote some amazing books. George Rushby wrote a book "No more the Tusker" about ivory hunting and elephants which is one of my favourites. I think for me I've always had a draw to adventure with a gun in hand. I suppose that's why the idea of hunting the eastern US states has an allure to me. It's not something many (or any) people from my country have done.
I also enjoy fishing and yabbying, yabbies are our equivalent of your crawfish. Do mostly inland fishing because that's where I live, but occasionally get to the sea. I'm quite content putting on some bait and laying in the shade of a redgum with a book or a hat over my eyes. Lures are becoming a big thing here now though and bait fishing is getting frowned upon more and more.
I love cooking, my favourite cuisines are anything hearty and comfort food related, I particularly like french cooking and don't mind some american style as well.
I really enjoy brewing beer but since having kids I no longer have the time. My brewing partner kept doing it and is going through the process of opening his own brewery which will be neat. Two of his three beers he wants to take to market are my recipes so I take that as a compliment.
I've dabbled in knife making, I don't have a forge so I'm doing stock removal which is not quite the same. Haven't done that for a while, it's more a spring summer thing where I have more daylight once the kids are down.
I enjoy gardening and animal husbandry, we have a few ducks and chickens on our 2 acres, and I've got about 30 fruit trees I've planted (12 of those are various varieties of figs) and 11 garden beds.
But what I spend most time doing is playing with my kids and spending time with my wife. I've got three boys aged 5, 3 and 10 months who keep me busy. The eldest two and I spend a lot of time out in the yard mucking around, making forts and fires, they go hunting with sharpened spear and looking for dinosaurs quite a bit!
