Y’a think a fella could find something in a well outfitted shop to punch holes in a strap… 🙄

A fella should use proper punches. And I really don't recommend those punches with plier handles and a rotating head with multiple size punches attached. I've had them bend out of alignment.
The sets that have a single shaft and changeable punch tips work fine and a are one of the few tools that don't need to cost a small fortune. I've got two Tandy sets that start and end at different sizes, one small one large. One I bought at the Tandy store 2 towns over the other came from a craft store that sells Tandy as well as other minor leather crafting stuff. Both have served me well.
Do place an appropriate mat under the leather so it punches cleanly and you don’t wreck your punch. I use one of the black ones Tandy sells made of some kind of plastic or rubber material. Soft pine board may suffice.

Being all self-reliant and such.

I’ll give it a shot on some scrap. Hesitated because it doesn’t punch or cut a hole, just displaces the material. Let’s see.

Yeah. That’ll do for this. 😎 Awl followed by small round needle file? Haven't needed to do this as the hole works fine without.

Snapsack! This was a thoroughly enjoyable project with lots of different skills to utilize. And now I can carry some stuff.

Good tip, Nock, While I agree that TODAY with the interchangeable punch sets, it is better for most people to buy them rather than a rotary or "star" punch as they have been called. However, I can personally attest that my own personal Star Punch I bought in the mid 1970's is still going strong and 10 years after I had purchased it and used it a whole lot, it was still more than good enough to cut perfectly clean holes in a western belt made for and presented to President Reagan. However, one has to USE them correctly and the problem is that they don't explain this in the advertisements. As you put pressure on them, you are supposed to work them back and forth to make the cleanest cuts and not just try to compress them straight together. Gus

Thanks! Thanks for the tips on the wax, too. Definitely worth doing. I can say everything carried in that haversack has stayed dry even in inclement weather. If it didn't add so much weight and deplete my beeswax stash, I'd use it on a tarp.

It does add weight. I feel good about the weatherproofness. I’ll do a test when it rains here again. An 8’x8’ tarp would weight 43 lbs! I have a Tentsmiths 8x8 that’s remarkably light, but that’s certainly not straight beeswax. Come on, Gus! Gimme some criticism on the leather!

Gus Unfortunately the quality of many manufactured goods is not what used to be.
