Gus said, "Just don't forget the chronological order to lick the frizzen "by the numbers."" You are going to have to man up, Gus. The rest of us are licking the flint and you are licking the frizzen. My grandmother would do that. Spence

I'm not sure if I am veering off primary topic or not but I also wonder about the accuracy of ball bags that have the mouth of heavier leather that you can squeeze to open... I will admit I made and use one of these, being inspired by Mr. Baker and his videos. It has worked well for many years and that it is operated with one hand is convenient. That said, I think this thread is onto something and we can all learn from it....

I have seen the quote that Gus posted before. I have used the knife handle on more than one occasion, but usually when my fingers are too cold to work well. Otherwise, I can start the ball with my thumb and a little effort - the ball doesn't just slide into the barrel with no resistance.

I have seen the quote that Gus posted before. I have used the knife handle on more than one occasion, but usually when my fingers are too cold to work well. Otherwise, I can start the ball with my thumb and a little effort - the ball doesn't just slide into the barrel with no resistance. I did away with a short starter quite a while ago and now I thumb the patched ball into the muzzle and use the bottom of my wooden powder measure to drive it below muzzle level and have taken to using a hand over hand method of running the ball down the barrel with a couple of one handed whacks to finish to make sure it’s seated correctly. Much faster for me. I’m wondering if having your ball loose in the bottom of your shot pouch might not be the fastest way to snap one up provided you either have a divider in it or you’re a minimalist with what you keep in a pouch with only one compartment making them easier to feel.

DAMN MARK BAKER!!! He’s been a blessing and a curse!! Nice fellow - met him and his wife at Ft. Union (ND) in 2012. He sent us bacon & white cornmeal from home after the event. Why? Because I served him yellow cornmeal, and only the lower classes ate yellow cornmeal... A few pictures from the talk he did about his gear:

His book is a marvelous resource, a treasure. The invoices are very educational, and the chronology, nearly 200 pages, provides the most comprehensive narrative of the settlement of the Kentucky frontier I've seen.
Don't use his method of making a molded cow's knee for the lock, though.
