Thanks pal! The crown on my blank is probably about 1/4”-1/2” higher than the original, and I’m sure I have a bigger melon at 23-1/2”… so proportions are a little off.
Lining and sweatband sometime this week. Need to build a Firelock to put a hole in it!

Anyone have a good source for round-blocked fur felt blanks?
I’m pretty smitten with this fan-tail hat. Looking forward to putting a lining and sweatband in it. The crown is definitely higher than a lot of period hats though… I did try to see if I could take some of the crown out, but it was obvious I would just make a mess of the blank.
Does anyone here shellac their wool hats?

I remember reading a website one time that addressed the high crown issue. They cut the crown from the hat, trimmed to the desired height and then sewed it back to the brim portion. The junction was covered by a hatband. This seems a viable option and I'd suggest cutting the hat a little above the crown/brim transition so the stitching isn't in a position to irritate the skin and hidden by the hatband & liner..

Really? That seems like an option… but ya’d think there would be low crown blanks coming off of round blocks from someone. I like this hat, and it has the look… but it would look better with about 1/2”-3/4” lower crown.
This was really fun and enjoyable. I always thought I’d purchase a ‘civilized’ hat, but I think I’m capable of building one. I love my fur Clearwater, so if I can find the right round-blocked fur blank, I’d absolutely give it a go. I enjoyed the process that much.

Townsend has fur felt blanks, I believe.

I recall someone on that other forum doing this hat trim, it might have been Loyalist Dave. My impression was that the crown of the hat was cut off half inch to an inch above where it transitions to the brim. Then, a little more can be cut off the top part if need be, but, just by overlapping the two pieces so the bottom edge of the top piece meets where the bottom piece transitions to the brim, one should seee significant height reduction.

Fantastic info forthcoming on the Meigs hat. They’re taking photos of the interior for me. And there may be another piece of information to share. I’ll know more in the morning.
‘Nock… is your blank fur or wool?

Honestly don't remember. Remind me later in the week to look for the receipt. Tomorrow I'm going to try to join the family for a couple days on Cape Cod.
I can't wait to see those photos. Did they say if it is possible to view the hat in person?
