Looks like it needs a feather or some other bling!

Hopefully this works. The Connecticut Historical Society was kind enough to share this and give permission to post. 1850_10_0_constructiondrawings.pdf (204.45 KB) Want to make a perfect copy of the Phineas Meigs hat?

Excellent pics. Thank you Ryan for doing the legwork on getting those.
I must have gotten the lined wool blank as it is cheaper. I think I felt that if I was going to spend the money for the more expensive lined blank I might as well just order the Clearwater hat I really want. I was hoping to learn from finishing the blank if ultimately I need to order Clearwater's option of a more exaggerated oval fit shape.

No worries. My pleasure. That .pdf drawing of the hat gives me the fizz.

Ryan,
Very much agree with Nock on doing the leg work and thanks for sharing the info from the museum.

Of course!
If you zoom in you can count threads in the linen lining. 😎
Which was already done and is noted in the drawing. 🤓
The head hole is mostly round… but I think it’s slightly oval with the cocked brim to the rear. That and the location of the musket ball holes makes me think this was worn fan-tail.

It looks pretty clear to me it is a round hat that was worn into a slightly oval shape from wearing it, which experimental archeology / practical experience shows that's what happens to round hats when worn over time.

I sent a note to Connecticut HS to see if an image could be had of the inside of the Phineas Meigs’ Hat. I’ll keep everyone posted, but I’m going to try to duplicate this as closely as possible… minus the musket ball holes. The musket ball holes…
IF this hat was worn with the cock on the left side, Captain Meigs was shot while the enemy was to his right rear, with the ball entering at about his 4:00.
IF this hat was worn with the cock to the rear in fantail fashion, Meigs was killed by a ball that struck above his right eyebrow, while facing the British.
Without seeing a view of the underside to observe the shape of the crown, it’s just conjecture. But I think this may have been worn fantail. Have you asked the museum about the location of the musket ball holes and their interpretation on how it was worn? Gus

Gus Exactly. Would you agree fantail or cock on the side? My eyes are seeing it as the oval indicating fantail.
