Gentlemen,
I have been interested in this activity / sport for quite sometime now and have been moving forward a little at a time as my budget allows. I live on a 40 acre hobby farm and it sometimes requires more attention and cost in repairs than I prefer to spend in either time or money, however infrastructure is important and I will not leave things in disrepair to pursue other interest. That being said, my disposable budget can fluctuate substantially at times depending on the activities or repairs on the hobby farm.
Below are the clothes I have worn to a local club show / shoot. Some things have picked from a friend who was challenged to dispose of his Uncle's estate (mostly Civil War era, but some earlier), some was items were purchased new and others given to me. I would like to join said club, but would prefer to get my ducks in a row so to speak with being correct in clothing before I make that leap to join. The club will accept blue jeans and period style shirt, however they expect you to build on your profile overtime and typically cover the time periods of this forum. The period I would like to portray is 1820's to 1840's, maybe a somewhat broad scope, but I can narrow it down some by saying I'm of a median or average income now, so being of lower or average means as a character would not bother me. I live in Illinois approximately 100 miles East of the Mississippi River (St. Louis), but frequent the Colorado area.
What I have are Townsend cotton canvas fall front trousers. I'm uncertain if it is the 1820's or Broadfall line of trousers, but they are definitely not narrow fall.
The 1st shirt is a banded collar with a brown / white check pattern. I have another or 2nd shirt with a collar, but it appears to be made of a random vertical stripe material (bottom of post).
The hat was given to me by a friend in high school who came home from a Civil War reenactment and I believe to be a Southern slouch hat. It is wool felt, it has a 5 inch crown and a 3 inch brim.
The hunting / shooting pouch made of leather and a possible bag made of cotton canvas.
Shoes are brown leather brogans.
With the above established. I would like use some of my gear and replace the items that are too far out of sorts.
(1) I've been reading on the forum and many of the off links to various sites and other forums. I believe the trousers, banded collar shirt and brogans would work fine together, however feel free to correct me if I'm wrong!
(2) I question the hat as it comes up to 40 years too late, but it does have sentimental value and I would love to modify it to work if possible. Typically, I push the top down and invert the crown to give it a flat look. If its not possible to make the hat correct, then a straw or palm hat may be nice (if correct) as it gets very warm and very humid in this area in the summer time...I'm open to suggestions in regards to a summer and/or winter hats as well.
(3) Looking for thoughts on the hunting / shooting pouch and the canvas possible bag that I currently use.
(4) Should I attempt to color or dye the trousers and canvas bag or leave them white?
(5) Looking for suggestions on additional items; what to purchase in regards to something warm, belt and other items I may be overlooking. I would like something to put on and wear over the shirt; something like a blanket shirt, but Townsend points to other items when it comes to being documented like the waist coat. I personally cannot stand a short coat, I prefer a coat or pullover that comes down past the hips, but I certainly do not want a smock as I believe it to be too long and would get in the way when tending to the fire or a deer. I hesitate to use the term Frock...like the linen look frock from Crazy Crow as there seem to be some difficulty documenting it. I could make a Capote as I have a solid blue wool USAF military blanket or military blankets from other counties that are more grey in color, but are solid color Capote common? Could or Should wool Leggings be made of the same wool blanket?
(6) Other suggestions? I intend to start a post regarding specific camping and hunting gear at a later time.
I'm looking to get things correct or close to correct. I assume some things crossover a few years, but not decades?
