FYI - when you make the canteen, DO NOT drill the holes or use a hole punch. Poke a couple holes with a narrow awl, stitch, poke a few more, stitch....repeat.
Even better if you make an awl with a broken needle or wire the same diameter as your needle. File the end to a triangular point.

Several apiaries and farmer’s markets local. Fingers crossed it isn’t breathtakingly expensive!

Yup. Hobby Lobby has beeswax it isn't cheap but last time inhad to buy some there I didn't think it was outrageous. Seems there is no middle ground. You either get it free, or close to it from a local bee keeper or you pay the hobby store prices. Maybe do a Google Maps search for apiaries (sp?) in your area and see what you cab get from one of them?

There are at least three local apiaries. Might be worth a look on Etsy too.
Hand and Hawkeyes, how much wax is needed for a canteen? I’m not particularly good with weights and measures if I can’t see the item in hand.
Have you used brewer’s pitch? I picked up some a while ago as an impulse buy with another order. Seems straightforward.

About half to a whole a bar of Ivory soap worth...approximately.
The reasons I use beeswax are it impregnates the leather (not sure if pitch does this or sits on the surface) and it is flexible (pitch appears stiff and can flake off). When impregnated, the leather is as hard as wood. Do not overheat your wax, as you can cook the leather and it will crack and crumble.

Thanks, Hawkeyes. I’m going to start with a small container for shot to get my leather skills back in order. Apparently I’m out of thread, so it’ll be a couple days until I can get it sewn up. Between what you and Black Hand provided, I should be good. I do want to look at using a bottle, either simply put in my pack, or wrapped in leather. Does anyone have a source for appropriate glassware? A period wine bottle would be good and strong, but the shapes don't really agree with what I think you want: i.pinimg.com/736x/2e/5f/da/2e5fdad815e383c33dfc5d1c5f8e1508.jpgI'm not sure a slender cylindrical wine bottle goes back that far, but I don't think so. If it does, then a dark green or brown or even black bottle would work. A BLACK BOTTLE??!!!!!! youtu.be/RPWGJ2KOSXASorry, I just couldn't help myself. LOL. I'm having a very hard time thinking of a period bottle shape that would work. Gus
