You may be surprised at the shapes of bottles used to make leather-covered glass canteens. From the Tom Wnuck estate: <button disabled="" class="c-attachment-insert--linked o-btn--sm">Attachment Deleted</button> Can you read what it says on the big one? Spence I can think of no reason to have bottles shaped like these canteens which were intended for another use. Does this mean these bottles were purpose-made as canteens, not ones which had been repurposed? Spence

There may be some obscure nautical use, but they seem well shaped to slip in a pocket. Where, oh where, to find something similar?

Cheese box-style wooden canteens. These were prevalent during the AWI, but I’m not sure about earlier periods. New and vintage cheese boxes are readily available as starting material.

A couple of canteens from the Tom Wnuck estate auction. The ceramic one is unique. Spence
