Judging from a couple of the posts from Dave Persons, both his own builds and advice on someone else's recently, turning a standard breach into a hooked, or standing, breach isn't that hard. I agree. I’m capable of the work. But I’m also capable of turning this into a project that will take years to complete. As Im sure everyone here has noticed. 😜 So I need to set some limits on things. Want to know how out of hand this can get for me? I spent about three hours last night researching thread counts in period linen to make an informed decision to purchase the ‘right’ modern fabric. THATS THE LITERAL DEFINITION OF A ‘THREAD COUNTER’!! I’m still a hoot around a campfire though. Honest!

Gus Flintlock Fowlers is all colonial guns. A marvelous work. I like lots of them, but I’ve decided on a British gun.

That’s a good one. I’ll see if I can track more of it down. I don’t really need to have an original to follow since many shared similar features. But if I could find one dated to the 1740s, with about a 46” pinned barrel and non-hooked breach, I’d be thrilled to try a near bench copy.

Where are you going to get appropriate wood for an English gun?
If you are going to substitute American walnut for English walnut I highly recommend that both you and BJ read and reread the method of using black and yellow aneline dyes outlined by Dave Persons to change the cold purple color of our walnut to the warm color of Engkish walnut. (sorry for the run on sentence) The difference between the two is vast and his method does an excellent job.

There are a bunch of builders/stockers around the area so I hope to track down a piece of European walnut. If that proves impossible, we’ll reassess the options.
Never heard back from Dave on the other forum, but his posted info is a great resource.
